Success Stories

Port Chilkoot Distillery: Maximizing Energy Efficiency

“The MEP, partnered with the College of Engineering student team, was so enthusiastic and a pleasure to work with. They provided very valuable information for our business decision-making and were highly professional and organized. Foraged & Found: Product testing helped to retain sales

“Chris Sannito and his team reviewed our scheduled processes and test samples of our products in their food testing lab to ensure that they are within the limits required to produce a food-safe product. We have also participated in the Better Process Control School and the HAACP Certification Courses (I & II) that they offer. We send them a sample of every single SKU we produce for a process authority letter. We do this every time we reformulate and/or change our packaging, in order to be compliant with FDA/DEC regulations.

We are very appreciative of Chris, Brian Himelbloom, and the Alaska Sea Grant/ Alaska MEP organization for the services they provide us.”

Elevated Oats: Growth & Scale Cohort

“There have been several occasions I've had the pleasure of learning from Phil and Lean Alaska as a new entrepreneur; the first was through the MEP Growth and Scale cohort.
We conducted classroom instruction to gain a better understanding before working on a specific project for our company. Having other manufacturing businesses in the cohort was a huge benefit, it introduced us to another network and additional perspectives. As the cohort progressed, Phil took the time to work with businesses on their project individually; this was much appreciated with all the businesses being at different levels.
Phil continued working on our project with us after the cohort was over. He’s always gone the extra mile to ensure we will be successful. At Elevated Oats, we were able to increase our manufacturing efficiency, decreasing costs and increasing production, with the information Phil taught with us. Lean Alaska would benefit any size and type of business. I'm grateful to have had this opportunity and gain so much knowledge. At Elevated Oats, we were able to increase our manufacturing efficiency, decreasing costs and increasing production, with the information Phil taught with us."

COVID-19 RESOURCES

We’re here to help.

As the state of Alaska works to navigate the current risks of the Coronavirus pandemic and the impact it may have on your business, we at Alaska MEP want to lend a helping hand as you and your staff handle this difficult time. The time is now, to think through potential risks for you and your organization. We owe it to our customers, employees, and communities to ensure health and safety in our business practices. Included below are links and checklists to serve as useful tools and help mitigate the biological and economic risks to your business.

The Alaska MEP, with support from UAA Business Enterprise Institute sister organizations (e.g. Alaska Small Business Development Center, Center for Economic Development), secured an amendment to SB241 that provides a waiver of liability for health care providers and local manufacturers of PPE.

This waiver now allows providers to use locally produced PPE without being held liable in the event that a healthcare worker becomes ill. Stipulations include the following:

  • No gross negligence,

  • Healthcare are to be made aware of PPE provided not meeting federal guidelines, and

  • All parties acting in good faith.

Financial Relief

The Small Business Administration (SBA) added Alaska to the list of states eligible for economic injury disaster loans. This means that Alaska businesses negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic can apply for financial assistance.

These loans offer up to $2 million in assistance, and interest rates are below 4%. These loans can be used to pay fixed debts, payroll, accounts payable, and other bills that can’t be paid due to the impact of COVID-19 on your business. To begin the application process for an SBA loan, click here.

SBA Disaster Loans, and new loans made available through the CARES Act, can be forgivable, in whole or in part, if the funds are used as the lending terms require (payroll, rent/mortgage, utilities, etc.). Talk to the SBDC or your SBA-approved lender today to learn how to apply for a forgivable loan.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Production Opportunities

If you are a manufacturer who is willing and able to produce critically needed PPE items for the state you will need to become a vendor for the State of Alaska and complete the Request for Information (RFI). The State of Alaska coordinated an RFI form for vendors to fill out with their intended items and production capabilities. Once approved, the state will then place and procure the order and distribute it to local health care facilities and first responders across Alaska. The RFI lists currently needed PPE items. However, this is a fluid situation and it will continue to change as the need changes. The RFI encourages manufacturers to send in products not included on the list if you feel it will play a vital role.
